Polypharmacy in the elderly - Strategies to improve prescribing

Caring for seniors with chronic illness is a daily challenge in clinical practice of the family doctor. Faced with the progressive aging of the population and the expectation that older people reach older ages, the doctor who cares for elderly people with chronic illness should be prepared to respond to complex problems prescription, carefully evaluate the patient and prior therapies and decide the most appropriate therapy to be performed. The existence of multiple chronic diseases in the same person often involves the prescription of drugs from different therapeutic groups thus increasing the risks. Polypharmacy is a risk for the elderly. The prevention of iatrogenic caused by polypharmacy is possible but requires the family doctor face close attention to the elderly with multiple chronic diseases.Downloads
