Durante décadas, a prestação remota de cuidados de saúde emergiu como uma alternativa para mitigar alguns dos desafios observados em cuidados primários. As novas tecnologias foram inicialmente apresentadas como uma estratégia para potenciar o acesso a cuidados de saúde em áreas rurais ou de difícil acesso, de forma a garantir cobertura geográfica e otimizar o acesso universal. No entanto, a potencial aplicação estendeu-se progressivamente a outros contextos, como uma opção conveniente em grupos selecionados de utilizadores.
