Introduction: The family approach is a fundamental clinical tool in family medicine. The clinical case presented reinforces the relevance of its use whenever the biomedical model reveals insufficiencies.
Case description: M., 44 years old, belonging to a reconstructed family, with a personal history of depressive disorder, had a new depressive episode in the postpartum period. M.’s past traumatic events were preponderant in the etiology and evolution of his current clinical condition.
Discussion: Family assessment tools allow identifying factors related to or even at the origin of an individual's dysfunction and empowering users to solve their problems. The family approach should be an integral part of family medicine consultations.
