Objectives: Mothers milk is the ideal feeding method for the first months of the infants life. However, when breastfeeding is not feasible there is a wide choice of artificial formula in the Portuguese market. This review intends to provide an analysis of a reasonably comprehensive list of formula available in the Portuguese market until December 2003, to be used as a support tool for daily practice of general practitioners. Methods: Systematic literature search in Medline, textbooks and Simpósio Terapêutico and Índice Nacional Terapêutico. Conclusions: In spite of a high breastfeeding uptake, many Portuguese mothers cease breastfeeding during the infants first month. General practitioners are often consulted on the type of artificial milk to be used. This advice is made difficult by the high number of formula products available in Portugal. On the other hand, the advantages of breastfeeding over artificial feeding, both for the infant and for the mother, are widely acknowledged, as well as the existence of very few true counter-indications for breastfeeding. It is thus urgent to implement measures to increase breastfeeding uptake at least until four to six months of life.Downloads
