Abstract

Tremor is the most common movement disorder. It may be associated with social disability, so accurate diagnosis is necessary for effective treatment. It is important to differentiate tremor from other involuntary movements like tics, choreiform movements or athetosis, myoclonic movements, or epilepsia partialis continua. The classification of tremors is based on clinical and syndromic features. The most common is essential tremor. This condition can be misintrepreted as Parkinson disease. Pharmacologic treatment is usually effective. Surgical treatment is considered for severe tremor after failure of medical treatment. The most recent surgical approach is deep brain stimulation. The family physician has an important role in the diagnosis and management of tremor. Patients should be sent to a movement disorder consultation when the involuntary movement is not readily identifiable.
