Introduction: In Portugal there are several topical steroids with distinct strength, different components and, therefore distinct properties. The clinic effectiveness of a topical steroid is inherent to its chemical properties and the application procedure, as well as the type of injury and the individual patient. Objectives: This bibliographical review intends to reassess the pharmacokinetic properties of topical steroids, to characterize the topical steroids available in Portugal, to establish some factors that influence their clinic effectiveness and to describe their indications, contra-indications and side effects considering their use in patients with skin diseases. Method: A Medline search was performed considering the ears 1993 and 2004 and dermatology textbooks were reviewed. The Infarmed Webpage and Simpósium Terapêutico were also used. Up-to-date information about topical corticosteroids in skin diseases treatment was gathered.Downloads
