Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease wich is of great impact when associated with other risk factors. Aim: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in a population of hypertensive patients attending a family physicians office; to characterize the hypertension state and the stratification of cardiovascular risk in this population. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study in 2003, at Ermesinde, Portugal. Sample: adult hypertensive patients attending a family physicians office (n=90). Study variables: sex, age, blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, body mass index, cigarette smoking, diabetes, family history of early cardiovascular disease, complications and hypertension associated diseases. The WHOs risk stratification scale (1999) was used to access the cardiovascular risk. Results: Normal and normal high blood pressure was found, respectively, in 11,1% and in 24,4% of the hypertensive patients. Association of hypertension with other risk factors was determined in 91,1%. In 16,7% the cardiovascular risk score was low, and 24,4% had a very high risk score. Discussion: The results emphasize the need to implement preventive and therapeutic recommendations to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in this population. The study should be repeated, as the new WHO cardiovascular risk guidelines were recently reviewed..
