One of the criteria for identifying successful is an elderly maintenance throughout the life of a natural dentition, healthy and functional, including all aspects of social and biological benefits, such as aesthetics, comfort, ability to chew, feel taste and speak. The poor oral health of the elderly has been particularly evident by high levels of tooth loss, periodontal disease, caries, xerostomia, mucosal lesions associated with the use of dental prostheses and maladaptive oral cancer. Prevention is a bet in this age group and some aspects, such as plaque control, use of antimicrobial agents, fluoride use in various presentations and a proper diet are the methods to advocate. The negative impact of poor oral conditions on quality of life of the elderly is an important public health problem that must be addressed on several levels and valued by those responsible for national health programs.Downloads
