Accidents involving elderly drivers occur especially in complex situations where there is a greater risk of excess cognitive stimulation, which suggests that cognitive limitations are a major cause of accidents. Recent changes in legislation have made the family doctor responsible for assessing older people wishing to renew their driving license. This paper aims to review the parameters of physical and mental assessment in compulsory medical examination to be carried out when renewing driving license in Portugal, the existing instruments and used internationally to make such an evaluation and the ethical problems and doctor-patient relationship when a result of impeding renewal letter.Downloads
