Autism is a complex and chronic neurodevelopmental disorder that is common and usually severe. The main goal of this article is to provide guidelines for screening and monitoring of the clinical signs that characterize autism. In most cases, these neurodevelopmental abnormalities are evident before the age of two. Classical clinical signs of autism include difficulties in social relationships and verbal and nonverbal skills as well as a rigid and repetitive behaviour. The author proposes the use of a specific screening test for autism, the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT), at the ages of 18 and 24 months. Suspected cases should be referred to the specialized multidisciplinary neurodevelopmental teams at Developmental Centers.Downloads
