Chronic use of medications by the population of a health center

The chronic use of medications brings important risks to the patient and is responsible for considerable economic costs. Objectives: to determinate the proportion of adult patients chronically-medicated, to analyse the type of medications that are more frequently involved and to study the association between age, gender, type of family and professional situation and the chronic use of medication and its types. Methodology: Cross-sectional study carried out in a random sample of adult patients from the S. João Health Centre, Oporto, Portugal, between February and December of 2004. Data were collected from the clinical records. Results: sixty three percent of patients were chronically-medicated. The chronic use of medications was more prevalent in the elderly, women, retired and unemployed patients. The type of medications more frequently used were antihypertensive (28,2%) and psychotropic drugs (28,2%). Discussion: In this study some of the results were similar to those found in the literature.
