Tetanus is a severe infectious disease caused by the contamination of wounds by spores of Clostridium tetani. Immunization is the only intervention able to produce immunity, but administration of several boosters is required to maintain protective and long-lasting antibody levels. Recent changes have been made to the Portuguese immunisation scheme, to come into force in 2017. These changes include a reduction in the number of recommended boosters, in line with recommendations from other European Union countries. The aim of this paper is to substantiate and analyse the evidence supporting these changes.Downloads
