Mental health referrals for depression in the Oeiras Health Centre

Objectives: To characterise the patients referred for depression by their family doctor to the Oeiras Health Centre Mental Health Clinic. Type of Study: Cross-sectional, descriptive, observational. Site: Oeiras Health Centre. Methods: This study included those patients referred for depression to the Oeiras Mental Health Clinic during a period of eight months in 1999. The following variables were measured: sex, age, waiting time for a mental health consultation, reason for referral, appropriateness of referral, therapy started by the family doctor, and diagnosis made at the Mental Health Clinic. Results and Conslusions: Fifty percent of referrals were made for depression (48 cases), with a predominance of female patients between 30 and 50 years of age. The diagnosis made by the family doctors was adequate in most cases. The reason for referral was considered appropriate in only 19 cases. Sixteen of the referred patients had not taken any previous medication, 19 were on antidepressants, and 13 on anxiolytic drugs only.Downloads
