Objective: To review frameworks, diagnostic criteria and methodologies for assessment of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in children and adolescents. Methodology: Literature review, focusing especially on articles containing data from the Portuguese child and adolescent population. Conclusion and Discussion: Since cardiovascular conditions are becoming more and more relevant as a cause of death in Portugal, our epidemiological profile needs continuing evaluation in order for appropriate and effective prophylactic and therapeutic interventions to be implemented, at a time in life when such actions may be essential for each individuals future health status. A suggestion is made for an action plan in which the general practice/family medicine teams assume a prominent role, and in which interventions to involve families and authoritative institutions such as schools (refectories, bars, syllabuses) are of the utmost importance. Pressure is recommended to be exerted on publicity regulation authorities, so that induction of new and harmful eating habits may be avoided and/or refrained.Downloads
