Abstract

Introduction: The sequellae of congenital toxoplasmosis can be serious and lead to foetal death or profound mental retardation. Methods: English language MEDLINE was searched, between 1996 and 2001, for the following MeSH Terms: «toxoplasmosis», «pregnancy», and «human». From this literature search, 167 abstracts were obtained, from which 45 full length articles were selected based on the following criteria: original articles or reviews concerning prevention, diagnosis or treatment of congenital toxoplasmosis. The Index of Portuguese Medical Journals was also searched, from which one article was selected. Conclusions: Prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis lies on general care implemented by non-immune women (primary prevention). Primary care doctors have an essential role in disseminating such preventive care. Serological screening allows for suspecting or even confirming an active infection, in which case therapy should be started in order to prevent maternal-foetal transmission (secondary prevention) and minimise sequellae (tertiary prevention).
