Abstract

Objectives: Condylomata acuminata are estimated to affect 1% of the sexually active population. A review is made of state-of-the-art knowledge on this health problem of growing prevalence in clinical practice which is furthermore associated with psycho-social problems characteristic of sexually transmissible diseases, such as fear of other infections and of cervical cancer in women. Family doctors are essential for their holistic approach which includes health education and promotion, and disease prevention. Methods: Literature review based on articles selected from searching MedLine and eMedicine, textbooks, and Centers for Disease Control guidelines. Conclusions: Condylomata acuminata are the most characteristic manifestation of genital infection by human papilloma virus, the commonest of sexually transmissible diseases. This condition is usually benign, and no specific additional screening or surveillance is indicated in sexually active individuals. It entails however assessing for other sexually transmissible diseases in the index cases and their sexual partners. It is associated with a high recurrence rate, since currently available therapies are not effective in eradicating the virus.
