Knowledge and attitudes of hypertensive patients

Objectives: To assess the level of knowledge of hypertensive patients in relation to hypertension and its attitude to anti-hypertensive medication. Know the variables that can influence knowledge, attitude and control of hypertension. Study Type - Transversal, analytical. Location: Center for Health Magellan, Coimbra. Population: Hypertensive patients enrolled in the Health Center Methods: 2323 hypertensive extracted a systematic random sample consisting of 332 individuals. The contacts were made from February to April 1995. We used a questionnaire, previously tested, consisting of 18 questions to assess the knowledge and attitude for 4. Variables studied: sex, age group, educational level, time of evolution hypertension, hypertension knowledge, attitude to antihypertensive therapy and control of hypertension. The procedure was the descriptive study of variables. The hypotheses were evaluated with test chi-square test of independence, Microstat program. Results: 78% of hypertensive answered. 66% female. 60% had more than 64 years. 78% had knowledge good / very good. People from 45 to 64 years who were shown to have a higher level of knowledge. 60% had positive attitude towards therapy. The level of knowledge positively influenced the attitude towards treatment and control hypertension, with statistically significant differences. Conclusions: The majority showed a good level of knowledge. It will be a good investment to promote the acquisition of knowledge, since they influence the attitude and control of hypertension.Downloads
