Contraception is an option and a right of the individual or couple that puts physicians practical and ethical issues, especially at particular stages of the life cycle of the woman, or when they are suffering from any condition that interferes with this issue. The doctor's role should be to clarify the benefits and risks of each contraceptive method and guide couples or individuals to make their own decisions, consciously and well detailed. This article is based on Contraception Consensus Meeting held in Évora, in September 2003, and methodology adopts a FAQ (frequently asked questions) in which several common questions in everyday clinical practice are placed and then summarily answered, based literature and clinical experience of the author. Throughout this article we proceeded to approach concepts and issues relating to contraception in particular situations: special situations (adolescents, postpartum, post-abortion, perimenopause) medical conditions and situations that occur in the childbearing age, interfere with contraception.Downloads
