Abstract

Relapse prevention therapy (RPT) is an essential therapeutic resource in the treatment of psychoactive substance dependence. Despite desintoxication or habit interruption constitute an outcome rapidly reached, the substance dependence delays far beyond this moment. Considering the scarcity of Portuguese literature in this domain, several concepts and intervention strategies are described, emphasizing two models - the Alan Marlatt model, and the Gorski-CENAPS® model. Then, similarities and differences between these models are identified, as well as its pertinence to the treatment of nicotine dependence. At last, we underline the importance for the person under recovery to be conscious of the reasons underlying change, the need to maintain a high level of alert toward relapse signs, and the role of social support in relapse prevention process.
