Abstract

Introduction: Psychotropic drugs consumption clearly increased last years. Often we observe people with psychosocial problems with the family involved. Objectives: to verify if there is any relationship between the psychotropic drugs consumption and socio-demographic and family factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Canelas Family Health Unit. Population: Canelas, Portugal Family Health Unit patients older than 17 years. Non randomized sample of 300 patients of the consultant population. The study variables were psychotropic drugs consumption, socio-demographic factors and family factors, like family apgar and vital family cycle stage. Results: Prevalence of consumption of tranquilizers was 40,3% and of anti-depressants was 11,3%. Prevalence of consumption of tranquilizers was higher in female sex and older people (<= 60 years); prevalence of consumption of anti-depressants was higher in female sex. Prevalence of consumption of psychotropic drugs was higher in individuals of large dysfunction families. Discussion: Prevalence of consumption of psychotropic drugs was higher than in other countries. According to bibliography is the relationship between female sex and psychotropic drugs consumption and the relationship between growing age and tranquilizers consumption. Family dysfunction can be related to psychotropic drugs consumption.
