General and family medicine: yesterday, today and tomorrow

When we want to envision the future, we can try to guess tomorrow, which is complicated, or we can understand the past, in the context, circumstances, and impact of the decisions that brought us to nowadays and extrapolate the results. We will rarely be right about what will actually happen, but we will have a very concrete idea of the options we have, the strengths we count on, and the weaknesses that arise.
It is relatively easy to tell the story of the last 40 years of the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS) in three axes: primary health care, hospital care, and continuing care.
