Abstract

The notification of myocardial infarction (MI) cases of the Portuguese Sentinel Network allows for the calculation of incidence, lethality and mortality rates on the population under surveillance and of the proportion of recurrent MI and hospitalisation rates. In the nine-year period studied (1990-98) an annual mean incidence rate of 53.7/100,000 was found. If this rate was applied to the resident population of Portugal in 1998 this would correspond to the occurrence of 5,359 MI episodes. Mortality rate in the study period was 13.4/100,000 and lethality was 24.8% (one in each four MI was fatal). Lethality was influenced by the MI episode being the first (20.7%) or a recurrent episode (40.2%). 79% of episodes required hospital admission.
