The infectious communicable diseases have been considered in the Portuguese legislation since 1949. Legislation has always been clear in attributing health authorities the generic competence for epidemiologic surveillance. Such activities would be impossible without the collaboration of all the entities for the tasks defined for each surveillance system. The notification is the first measure to be taken and that sets up the procedures considered necessary to control the infection according to the state of the art. This epidemiologic control aims at breaking the chain of transmission of infection and always implies different interventions. In some cases, the measures of the health authority are an answer to a public health emergency.Downloads
