Acute complications of diabetes (hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state and lactoacidosis) are life threatning conditions, related in most cases to acute illnesses and therapeutic failures. These complications can be prevented by patient education. The Family Physician must be prepared to diagnose and treat them and to refer the patient immediately to a specialized unit, especially when the patient is vomiting and showing signs of dehydration.Downloads
