Objective: To condense recent data on diagnosis and therapy of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Review using Medline (in English) as data source between January 1997 and June 1998. The following search words were used: Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity; Child; Pre-school; Infant. Conclusions: ADHD is a very frequent developmental disorder which affects the lives of school-aged children, as well as their families and their communities. This disorder is nevertheless underestimated: it is often not diagnosed and is seldom treated appropriately. Currently, a multimode approach is considered to be of greatest benefit for treating ADHD. Treatment guidelines, prognostic and causal factors are discussed, as well as the role of the family doctor. Making doctors in general more aware of this type of learning problem is essential if one wants the management of this disorder to improve.Downloads
